Expanding Horizons Curriculum

Expanding Horizons is the third strand of our unique South Island Curriculum offer.

ViA is the term we use for all the out-of-class opportunities for students that help them to become more rounded and engaged individuals. The Third Curriculum is where students aim to put our school values into action and become active members of our school, our community and the world around them. It is their chance to ‘Make a Difference’.

The opportunities open to students are numerous and vary every year and every term. Our extracurricular programme offers both sporting and non-sporting activities; our Drama and Music programmes offer opportunities for students to develop creativity and public performance. All programmes allow students to take on leadership roles, often working with younger students to develop skills.

Students play a significant role in the ongoing evolution of our Expanding Horizons offer. Our student MaD Council determines the charity and service activities that we want our students to support. Our MaD Week Programme offers outstanding experiences and the opportunity for deep reflection to our students. Each trip must pass the MaD Council’s MaD Filter to determine its appropriate contribution to our School values. The six Houses in school all support charity and community improvement programmes.

The Student Council also has an active voice in deciding events that are organised in school.

HKAYP, our outward bound programme, is offered at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and develops invaluable skills such as team work, social interaction, leadership and resilience.

Through our Prefect system we offer vertical tutoring and leadership skills to support younger students. Our Bauhinia Prefects run activities for Year 7 and 8 as well as supporting new students when they join the school.

Students who commit wholeheartedly to this programme (and nearly all do) change themselves and gain the qualities that are unique to a South Island Student.

South Island students are composed, articulate, aware, compassionate and confident. They know that their opinions matter and they raise our expectations year on year. Our senior Diploma students run a number of whole school events every year. These include the celebration of Diwali; celebrating our internationalism at our festival of dance and song at the International Evening; recognizing the voices of our students in our TEDx TSIS conference; creating and designing at The Innovation; and tapping into the knowledge of our own wider community in our Careers Conference. Teams plan, audition and work together to ensure the success of each event.

Activities

Here at South Island School, we offer a huge extracurricular activities programme. These activities range from sports coaching to debating, from environmental work to creating the news. Our dedicated team of teachers and coaches ensure that the clubs are well structured and fun for all. We view our after school activities programme as an extension of our curriculum, offering students the opportunity to become involved in or develop existing skills outside of the classroom environment. We encourage students to try something new and push themselves beyond their comfort zone. It’s also a great opportunity for them to get to know their peers and teachers in a more informal setting.

Sports

South Island has a commitment to getting all students active. In addition to the Physical Education programme, there is a wide range of sports offered in the extracurricular programme including athletics, swimming, cross-country, basketball, football, rugby, netball, badminton, tennis, hockey, squash, dragon boating and much, much more.  We strive to get as many students as possible involved, active and competitive in a sport at whatever level is appropriate to the individual.

The sports facilities are extensive, completed with an indoor 25m heated swimming pool, sports hall, floodlit astroturf, fitness and weight training area, climbing wall, two outside basketball/tennis courts and an indoor gymnastics and trampolining area. To facilitate sports such as rugby, football and hockey training sessions are conducted off-site at the Aberdeen and Happy Valley pitches.

SIS has a very strong reputation for sporting success and our students achieve personal and team success both within and outside of school. Our school competes locally in both the ISSFHK and HKSSF leagues in Hong Kong.  Many students represent SIS and Hong Kong SAR in a variety of sports in international competitions as well.  As a recognised Athlete Friendly Education Centre by the World Academy of Sport, our school strongly supports our students and their pursuit of success excellence on and off the field.

MaD Week

As a school, we place strong emphasis on our students to make a difference to themselves and in the world and we encourage this philosophy throughout the year but also have a dedicated week beyond the traditional classroom called ‘SIS goes MaD’ Week.

The week is usually in mid-October before the half-term break (subject to final confirmation) and has different activities for different Year groups.

The week provides opportunities to bring the school values to life:

  • We work to nurture ourselves, our society and our planet and take personal responsibility for a sustainable future.
  • We approach and engage other people with respect and honesty.
  • We manage ourselves and our learning by developing self-awareness, resilience and courage.
  • We explore our world with open minds and compassionate perspectives.
  • We use our initiative and commit to making a difference by being creative, resourceful and reflective.

Each year our students are able to choose from a diverse programme of activities, 1 week-long activity to participate in, some local and some overseas. Each activity has specific learning outcomes students will have the opportunity to achieve. Creativity, Activity and Service are three of the heartbeats of an IB Diploma School and making a difference is the highest aspiration we believe our community can set.  These activities are some of the richest life experiences a student can encounter in school and these are the moments which they will always remember.

School Bus

South Island School runs an extensive range of school bus services across Hong Kong Island. The bus service is contracted out to Kwoon Chung Bus Services.

Most students will be picked up close to their homes or at public transport nodal points. The school bus service is not meant to provide a door-to-door service. Students may be required to walk or take additional transportation between their home and their designated pickup/dropoff point.  The school bus service brings children to school in time for the start of school in the morning and takes them home after school in the afternoon.

Daily Life

At South Island School, each school day is broken into 2 (Tuesday and Friday) or 3 (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) periods, with each period lasting for 2 hours.

As different subjects require different amounts of instruction hours, some classes may last through the whole two hours (with breaks at the teachers’ discretion) while some classes may only be for 1 half of a Period (60mins) with students attending another class for the remaining time of that period.
