Pastoral Curriculum

We believe that effective pastoral care is the ‘nourishment for the learning journey’ to which all students have an entitlement. Tutor time is the primary learning space for pastoral care where we share and ‘live’ our school values through the Pastoral Learning Curriculum (PLC). The PLC aims to explicitly teach and promote health and well-being, build resilience, enhance academic care and build human and social capital among our community.

The PLC is a planned programme of learning through which pupils acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. As part of a whole school approach, it develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

The planned spiral nature of the programme ensures learning is revisited, reinforced and extended in age- and stage-appropriate contexts and is tailored to our students in Hong Kong and an international school setting. This also forms a cohesive link with our school well-being agenda.

Learning is a developmental process that changes our thinking and behaviours, enabling us to acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes while providing a catalyst for creativity, critical thinking and independent learning. At South Island we have recognised the IB Approaches to Learning and embraced the attributes of the IB Learner Profile as the outcome we wish our students to develop and to have acquired when they leave the school and become responsible young adults.

Tutors

Each student will be part of a Tutor Group of 18 students with a teacher leading as the Tutor. The Tutor and students remain together throughout their journey at South Island School from Years 7 to 13.

The role of the Tutor is crucial as they serve as advocates for their students, acting as the main point of contact for adults. They gather information from teachers regarding each student's needs and spearhead efforts to provide the necessary support.

Tutors make every effort to ensure that the complex relationship fostered between the student, the home and the school is positive. The qualities expected from our tutors by our students and the school include trustworthiness, fairness, consistency, sensitivity, caring, and enthusiasm while having high expectations and a sincere interest in them as individuals.
