Our History

2010

Graham Silverthorne becomes the fifth Principal of SIS

John Wray left SIS to take up a position as Head of Mulgrave School in Vancouver, Canada. The school welcomed Graham Silverthorne as the new Principal. The John Wray Atrium was opened, providing a well lit indoor common area for students to gather.

2011

New Houses Established

The 7 original houses (Tolstoy, Schweitzer, Noble, Marden, Jefferson, Hillary, Alyward) were replaced by 6 new houses, each with a name of the word house in a different language: Shtepi (Albanian), Maison (French), Kuca (Croatian), Casa (Spanish), Namas (Lithuanian), Bahay (Tagalog).

2012

New Learning Families introduced; the library renovation is complete

New Learning Families names are introduced as Family Bauhinia, Family Bamboo and Family Banyan. These three names are in association with the school’s core principles – supporting our community, celebrating life in Hong Kong and being mindful of the power, beauty and sustainability of the natural world.

In November, the renovation of the library was completed and reopened as the Learning Resources Centre (LRC).

2013

Sports Hall Renovation

The Sports Hall was renovated with new flooring and gym equipment, including a climbing wall and a weight training area overlooking the main sports hall. 2 new classrooms were established to allow for classroom instruction when necessary.

2014

The Space and AstroTurf is opened; School Hall renovation

In February, the school opened the new multipurpose facility The Space along with our top grade, rugby appropriate Astro Turf.

In November, the School Hall renovation was completed, providing a top-class performance space with seating up to 400+ for the South Island community.

2016

Expansion of the curriculum; School Foyer & Refectory renovations

The IB MYP Programme is introduced to Years 7-9 as the school looks to introduce the IB approaches to learning earlier for smoother transitions into our students’ senior years.

Additionally, the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) was introduced to our Years 12-13 student, enhancing the existing BTEC offerings and the Advance Diploma Programme.

The School Foyer and Refectory were renovated.

2017

40th anniversary; Principal Graham Silverthorne departs

The school’s 40th Anniversary. Graham Silverstone left in December to take up a position as Head of UWCSEA East in Singapore.

2018

Annette Chapman takes over as Acting Principal, becoming the first woman principal at South Island School; Tom Vignoles is the seventh principal at SIS

With the departure of Graham Silverthorne at the end of 2017, Annette Chapman becomes Acting Principal for Terms 2 & 3 during the 2017-2018 academic year. Tom Vignoles becomes the seventh Principal of South Island School in August.
